May 19 is the annual national holiday in Turkey to memorialize the start of the Turkish War of Independence.
On May 19, 1919, Mustafa Kemal Ataturk arrived in Samsun to start the liberation efforts. Turkish nation united with the leadership of Ataturk, fought for the independence and on October 29, 1923 The Grand National Assembly proclaimed the Republic of Turkey.
May 19 started to be celebrated as the Day of Commemoration of Atatürk and Youth and Sports Festival.
